Help End Hunger!

by Grace George — Categories: Uncategorized2 Comments

April is the month Pack 107 will be participating in the annual Scouting for Food campaign.   We’re asking each Cub Scout to collect non-perishable foods from their friends, neighbors, and family, then bring them to the April 17th pack meeting.  The food will then be taken to God’s Bounty, Inc. in Wanamaker.  God’s Bounty is a not-for-profit food pantry, which serves Franklin Township and surrounding areas.

Remember the Scout Oath, in which Cub Scouts promise to “Help other people at all times”?  That’s what this service project is all about.  We’re helping those in our own community who may otherwise do without.    It also helps fulfill the Cub Scout Slogan, which states, “Do a Good Turn Daily.”

Please remember to follow the rules of safety when collecting door-to-door!

1. Cub Scouts should wear their uniform to be easily identified.

2. An adult must accompany the scout.

3. Scouts should be familiar with the neighborhoods in which they sell. Use safe pedestrian practices.

4.  Collecting should be during daylight hours only.

5.  Scouts should NEVER enter a customer’s home unless accompanied by an adult.

6.  Scouts should never give out their names, addresses, telephone numbers, or email addresses to people. Only the den leader’s telephone number or other adult’s telephone number should be given BY the adult present.

It’s very easy to collect a lot of food, you just have to ask!  You might benefit from taking a wagon or other way to carry the food, which might become quite heavy.

Now, get out there and DO YOUR BEST!

Special Request for Help

by Grace George — Categories: Uncategorized1 Comment

Pack 107′s awesome Awards Chairperson, Tammy Meyer, would like some help.  With all of the work Tammy does for our pack, she deserves it!  Plus, she’s a really nice person:)

You can help Tammy and Pack 107 by going to Staples and purchasing a package, (or two!), of Staples Pastels 8.5″ x 11″ colored paper, (blue &/or gold, please).  Once you’ve purchased the paper, you submit the rebate form either online or by mail, and in 4-6 weeks you will get your money back.  This is a GREAT way to help Pack 107, (and Tammy!), save some money, and an EASY way to do a Good Turn.  The rebate is limited to 2 per family.

If you’re able to get the paper, you can bring it to the April pack meeting or give it to your den leader to do so.

Here’s the paper  needed:

Here is the page with detailed information about the rebate.

While you’re there, you might consider picking up a Staples Rewards card.  There may be more opportunities to help the pack in the near future.  Stay tuned and thanks, in advance, for your help!

The Greatest Spectacle in Scouting

by Grace George — Categories: Uncategorized1 Comment

(Pictured: Franklin Reed, Dylan Selke, and Finn McCain with Assistant Cubmaster Wayne Evans and Cubmaster Scott McKinney)

Wow!  What an amazing Pinewood Derby that was!  We need to give a big Cub Scout salute to the Landmark Baptist Church for hosting this event.  It was the perfect venue and we had a really fun day of racing and hanging out with our pack family.  The concession stand made over $300, half of which will go to Friends of Scouting to help our local council keep scouting affordable for all scouts, and the other half will go back to the pack to help us provide more fun events in the future.  Thank you to the Pinewood committee for doing an excellent job, to the leaders for their support, to the parents for all they did to make the day possible for their scouts, and mostly, to the  scouts who DID THEIR BEST.  We had some great-looking cars this year, and some really fast ones, too.  It seems EVERYBODY was a winner, whether you took home an award, or not.  Congratulations to you all for another successful Pinewood Derby!

Be a Friend

by Grace George — Categories: UncategorizedNo Comments

If you haven’t already considered donating to the annual Friends of Scouting campaign,  here is an opportunity to learn more and help local scouts.

Your Friends of Scouting investment provides…

- Program support for your Scout (it costs the council $150 per Scout each year)

- Training, service, and support for adult volunteers

- Seven camps located around the council

- Five Scout service centers located around the council

- Financial assistance for youth that might not otherwise be able to participate

You can click here to make a pledge online or you can send a check, along with this FOS pledge card to the address shown on the download.

Don’t miss Pack 107′s FOS presentation at this year’s Pinewood Derby on Saturday, March 10 at Landmark Baptist Church.   Purchases made at the concession stand will also benefit the FOS campaign.

Remember, Scouting builds character and prepares our scouts to become leaders.  Without the generous support of donors, this would not be possible.  Become a Friend of Scouting today!

Cubmaster Minute

by Grace George — Categories: UncategorizedNo Comments

Hello Pack 107 scouts, parents, and leaders!  I’d like to take a few moments to discuss the Core Value of the Month for March, 2012.

Core Value of the Month: Compassion:

Compassion means being kind and considerate, and showing concern for the well-being of others.

Everybody has something valuable to offer and nobody likes being left out. Help your Cub Scouts be aware of the needs of others. Disabled people deal with limitations in their everyday lives.

Cub Scouts with Disabilities or Special Needs: Not all Cub Scouts may be able to participate with the same success. Understanding Cub Scouts with disabilities or special needs and adapting activities will provide excitement and adventure for all. Your responsibility as a leader or parent is to help  Cub Scouts find success in doing their best.

Check out the  Scouting for Youth With Disabilities Manual , then speak to your scouts about dealing with those who have disabilities. Being kind to others that have limitations is showing compassion.  (Be advised the link will take you to a PDF file at scouting.org and may take several moments to load.)

The following is the month of March’s Belt Loops and pins that leaders and parents can help the scouts earn:

Disabilities Awareness: Cub Scouts learn about special needs of children and adults. They volunteer and help someone with special needs as they earn the Disabilities Awareness belt loop and pin. You might focus on the Indiana School for the Deaf or Indiana School for the Blind. They sometimes allow certain groups to tour their campus. There are opportunities for service on these campuses and elsewhere in our community.

Another resource would be the Indiana Special Olympics chapter.

Kickball: Who hasn’t played this game?! Leaders will teach the boys how to play this fun game while working toward winning the Kickball belt loop or pin. Have fun with this! There are actually kickball tournaments that are open to the public.  Learn more about that here.

With Pinewood approaching, den leaders and parents should  take a moment and read the Pinewood Derby  Tips at scouting.org.

I encourage you to speak with your scouts and parents, because the Pinewood Derby can be a great time or a stressful time. It is up to us as adults to make sure our scouts enjoy this time. The cars don’t have to be perfect! This is supposed to be a FUN time spent for scouts and their Akela, making a Pinewood car together.

When I first started in Pack 107, I wanted to make my boys’ car so he would get a ribbon. I realized very quickly that I wasn’t the one racing the car. It wasn’t about the ribbon or me at all.   It was about spending time with my boy and teaching him something he will remember for a lifetime. We truly enjoyed the time we spent together.

Please use this time to teach the boys and the parents that this is a project that they will remember for the rest of their lives and you’ll both want it to be a great memory.  What will your scout remember about 2012 Pinewood Derby?

B&G info

by Grace George — Categories: Uncategorized1 Comment

The Blue and Gold committee is very excited to host this year’s banquet and has a great evening in store for you. This is Cub Scouting’s most important event of the year and the big night is quickly approaching!  Please take a moment to review this post, so you are prepared with everything you need to know and to bring.

Den Leaders

~Den leaders should be at the Landmark Baptist Church at 6:00 on Friday, February 17th to set up their den display.  We will also be setting up the raffle display at this time, so please bring your raffle basket and a small box to hold raffle tickets.  Please be sure to put your den number on the raffle basket, as well as the ticket box.  A detailed list of the contents of your basket is also appreciated by those who will be participating in the raffle. This can be placed next to the ticket box.

~Den leaders are also asked to stay a little while extra to help with set-up on Friday night.  We will also need volunteers to help with food during the banquet, as well as cleanup help immediately following the event.

Scouts/Parents

~Please arrive at the Landmark Baptist Church at 5:30.  This will allow a few minutes to find your table, as they will be assigned by dens this year.  Dinner will begin at 5:45.

~Tigers and Wolves should bring two dozen ready-to-eat rolls per family.  Bears will bring macaroni and cheese.  Webelos Ones will bring a bottle of salad dressing PLUS one salad topping.  Webelos Twos will each bring two bags of salad.

~Don’t forget to bring cash for the raffle tickets.  1 ticket is $1,  6 for $5.00, and 30 for $20.00.

~Anyone who can help with food service during the banquet should please find me, Grace George, when you arrive at the banquet.  Your help is needed and appreciated!

~Scouts need to be in uniform.  Don’t forget to bring your camera!

We look forward to seeing each one of you there!
